Sunday Late Morning

Elizabeth

I grabbed Jonas’s laptop. Pulling it closer, I typed in the partial name of the store that appeared in the background of the photo that my very clever husband found.

“It’s a tattoo shop. Queen Gorgeous Tattoos.” I kept clicking around the site. “I wonder what the difference is between a tattoo shop, parlor, or studio.”

“What are you looking for?” asked Jonas.

“I’m not sure but I’ll know it when I see it.” I switched pages, zooming in on a photo of the store’s interior and then the next photo of the front window. I clucked my tongue as I flipped back and forth, unable to stop the critical sneer I felt on my face. Accidentally, I clicked forward an extra time only to find a page featuring a large photo of Circe, topless with a sultry look on her face and a button to make an appointment barely hiding her breasts.

I paused there and considered what I’d seen. Then, noticing Jonas was still staring at the screen, I slapped his arm. “She’s certainly aiming for a certain demographic, isn’t she? But I think she needs a makeover.”

Jonas tilted his head to examine her from another angle. “What’s wrong with her?” He glanced at me. “Why the criticism?”

I huffed at his assumption. “Since when have I ever been judgmental?”

He gave me that cute, wry grin. “You mean besides just then?”

I ground my teeth together.

Jonas continued, “Susie Q.”

“She doesn’t count.”

“And her mother.”

“Enough. Besides, I don’t mean her looks. It’s her store and website that need a makeover. They’re terrible. Look at these boring images.” I pointed at the graphics on the wall behind Circe in the large photo. “These look like a kindergartner drew them.” Then, I remembered a certain kindergartner with whom I’d become friendly a few months ago and added, “One who can’t draw.”

Jonas shrugged and turned his hands up. “Okay, so her graphics are bad. What difference does it make?”

I chewed my bottom lip for a moment. “I want to go check her out. If she met with Frank regularly, maybe she knows something about why he was killed.”

Jonas frowned. “Then I’m coming too. I don’t want you going somewhere by yourself that might be dangerous.”

“That’s sweet, but it’s the middle of the day. I’ll be fine.”

“Remember the car from last night?”

I felt a chill run through me. In all the excitement this morning, I had forgotten.

Jonas nodded at my reaction. “I’m going with you.”

“Okay, fine.” I pretended that it didn’t matter, but I felt relieved just the same. I stared at the photo again. “I think I know what my cover story will be.”

Jonas gave me a quizzical look.

“I can’t very well barge in there asking questions about a dead guy she knew and hope to learn anything useful.”

“You’ve certainly tried that in the past.” Jonas laughed at the face I made. “So, what’s your idea?”

“I’ll tell her I’m looking for more clients for my business. I can pitch her on doing some new graphics for her website and maybe posters for her walls, as well as some brochures and her business cards.
